Field Technician – Heavy Equipment

We are seeking a Heavy Equipment Field Technician to perform skilled tasks in the mechanical repair and maintenance of heavy trucks, excavating equipment, and other related construction equipment; both gasoline & diesel powered. Work is done mainly in the field on our job sites within the tri-state area of PA, MD and WV. This is a full-time position.

Duties Include:


  • Perform routine repairs, service, maintenance, and diagnostics of all types of heavy construction equipment
  • Repair heavy equipment that has broken down by repairing or replacing damaged or worn parts
  • Follow instructions given by Shop Management
  • Operate and inspect machines or heavy equipment in order to diagnose defects
  • Test mechanical equipment after repair or assembly to ensure proper performance and compliance with manufacturers’ specifications
  • Diagnose faults or malfunctions to determine required repairs using engine diagnostic equipment or calibration devices
  • Dismantle and reassemble heavy equipment using hand tools and/or hoists
  • Clean, lubricate, and perform other required preventive maintenance work on heavy equipment and heavy vehicles
  • Examine parts for damage or excessive wear
  • Maintain specific and detailed equipment service records in DHM’s Shop computer software
  • Read and understand operating manuals and technical drawings
  • Adjust, maintain, and repair or replace subassemblies, such as transmissions using hand tools, jacks, and hoists
  • Ability to carry out both oral and written instructions
  • Troubleshoot and identify problems, and arrive at possible solutions
  • Repairs are done both in the DHM Shop area and out in the field on job sites that are typically within a 2-hour drive from the DHM Shop location, but most of the work is performed in the field
  • Perform labor tasks and other duties such as light cleaning, maintenance, and repairs as assigned
  • Valid commercial driver’s license with a good driving record – the field service truck requires a CDL
  • Must have and maintain a valid medical examination certificate for DOT
  • Experience operating a crane attachment on the commercial field service truck
  • Minimum of 5 years applicable work experience in this specific field
  • Able to work within OEM diagnostic software and have experience with OEM procedures
  • Trained or certified on Caterpillar, John Deere and/or Bobcat heavy construction equipment
  • Experience with A/C diagnostics and repairs
  • Must have all of your own tools, but a quarterly Tool Allowance is provided and uniforms are provided
  • Must have above average computer and diagnostic skills
  • Able to work 10-hour workdays Monday through Friday and be punctual and organized
