Land Surveyor

The Land Surveyor estimates and determines property boundaries for construction projects, both residential and commercial. They provide data and compile legal documents called surveys to determine construction location for buildings, roads, utilities, and map making. This can also be done to help prevent or settle disputes having to do with land usage and property ownership. The job duties that a Land Surveyor should expect are diverse and require various training and skills. A licensed Professional Land Surveyor is preferred, but not required. This is a full-time position.

Duties Include:


  • Carryout the review of the land using technical equipment to ensure it is suitable for the construction project to take place.
  • Conduct physical site surveys to produce maps using GPS, surveying instruments, digital images, and satellite photographs. Licensing in the use of drones to collect images to produce data is OHM will provide training if needed.
  • Measure the distances and angles between points on, above, and below the land surface by using the required land surveying equipment.
  • Travel to locations and use known reference points to determine the exact location of important features.
  • Analyze data by using geographic information systems (GIS) and drawing charts using computer-aided design (CAD). Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D and/or Carlson Survey is preferred.
  • Prepare plots, maps, and reports.
  • Physically pound or hammer survey stakes into the ground on job sites, as needed.
  • Use Topcon GPS & Topcon Robotic equipment, as well as basic survey tools such as instrument tripods, lasers, levels, and measuring rods.
  • Maintenance and upkeep of all surveying equipment.
  • Responsible for own computations and CAD-verify the calculations and analyze and interpret the data.
  • Read and correctly interpret blueprints and designs.
  • Managing and monitoring projects from the start to finish and monitoring changes in the land during the construction process.
  • Researching previous survey evidence, legal documents, survey records, and land titles to clarify boundaries, and other records to obtain data needed for surveys.
  • Record accurate property lines and plots with the local land use authorities.
  • Perform miscellaneous labor tasks and other duties, as or when assigned.
  • Knowledge of the construction trade is required, and excavating experience is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of GPS and GIS.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license with a safe driving record, and able to travel distances to job sites.
  • Ability to use hand tools and survey equipment applicable to the survey trade in a safe manner, prefer experience with Topcon GPS and Topcon
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce workplace safety procedures and practices.
  • Degree in surveying or civil engineering is preferred, or minimum 2 years land surveying or construction surveying experience required.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce workplace safety procedures and practices.
  • H.S. Diploma is required. SIT or Associates Degree in surveying or civil engineering is preferred, but not required. Minimum 2 years land surveying or construction surveying experience including boundary, topographic & construction stake-out is required.
