DHM owns and operates five slate quarries in PA.

Slate and slate fill are excavated directly out of the ground and sold as a commodity directly to the public. As with all slate, the size of the pieces do vary. Although at times it may be difficult to accomplish, we do our very best to provide slate that is uniform in size. Our slate has many uses determined by their type.

Slate Fill

Slate Fill

Slate fill is found closer to the surface of the ground and has many more dirty “fines” in it. It can be used as structural fill for under buildings or to fill in an area that needs to be brought up to grade.

Cow Path Slate

Cow Path Slate

We sell what many farmers refer to as “cow path” slate to agricultural farms all over the region. Cow path slate does not have as many “fines” in it and is a little bit closer to clean slate. Cow path slate is typically softer, and usually brown in color. Many farms use this in areas where the cattle walk in order to keep them out of the mud while also providing a path that will not cut up their hooves.

Driveway Slate

Driveway Slate

We also sell driveway slate. This type of slate can be used on driveways and parking lots as a sub-base, or even as a finished product. It is typically blue in color.

Shot Slate

Shot Slate

Once we get to the bottom of our slate pit and are unable to dig any deeper because the slate is too hard, we then drill and blast the slate. This produces a product that is comparable to limestone. It is blue in color and very hard. This slate is typically 10″ or less in size and is often used as a sub-base for roadways and parking lots.
